Tri-State Events
Family Fun Day!
Family Fun Days are held on the 3rd Sunday of each month from 2 to 4 p.m. and are an opportunity for parents, grandparents and children to interact with each other during educational activities.
Each Family Fun Day has a specific topic and typically includes a video and/or presentation, crafts, activities, a free take-home packet and a book drawing. Refreshments are also served.
Admission to the Family Fun Day is $2 per person and reservations are encouraged. Reservations may be made by calling 605-723-1200.
2026 Family Fun Day Schedule
October 18 – Monster Movies. The old Universal Pictures monsters are now classic Halloween figures. How did it come to be? Find out and make cool monster masks!
November 15 – The History of Birthstones. Twelve stones that mark twelve months. Which is associated with your birth month?
December 20 – A Nutcracker Christmas. How were they invented and how has a holiday ballet made them famous!
2027 Family Fun Day Schedule
January 17 – Lakota Winter Count. Learn about the history behind these remarkable documents and make one of your own.
February 21 – On The Money! Learn its history and value; do a “buy” the museum activity; check out a coin collection and make a wallet.
March 21 – The Science and Art of Salt. Find out why it has been sought for centuries, do an experiment and then a “salt pairing”.
First Saturday Brunch
First Saturday Brunches (FSB) are held on the first Saturdays of each month, with the exception of July, because of the Black Hills Roundup. They provide an opportunity to eat a meal prepared by museum volunteers, see friends from the surrounding communities and hear an educational program.
Speakers are carefully chosen to provide a variety of experiences for FSB attendees and topics can be about history, science, culture or the arts.
Admission to First Saturday Brunch is $5 per person or free with museum membership. Reservations are required.
2026 First Saturday Brunch Schedule
October 3 – Ken Vogele: Native American Art: Purposeful Beauty. Vogele showcases his art collection and discusses its cultural significance.
November 7 – David Wolff: Monopoly and Competition: Railroads Arrive in the Black Hills. The story of the arrival of railroads and their evolving historical role in South Dakota history.
2026 Classes
PreK-3rd grade from 10-noon; class for older kids 1-3. Morning class for younger kids include gathering circle and songs. Snacks provided for both morning and afternoon classes.

Bats! – Saturday, October 10th. They may not be Dracula, but they’re surely close. Learn how they live in the realm of darkness.
Pumpkin Painting Class – Saturday, November 21st. Watch a cute video about a pumpkin patch, then paint a pumpkin to take home for your Thanksgiving!
Origins of St. Nicholas Class – Saturday, December 12th. Learn the history of St. Nick, see a classic Santa video, and make a candy boot!
2027 Class Schedule
Winter World Games – Saturday, January 19th. Learn about and watch footage of the games in China. Hot chocolate served!
Be My Valentine – Saturday, February 13th. Learn about the holiday, and make cards and candy hearts to take home.
Limericks and Shamrocks – Saturday, March 13. What’s the tale behind him? Let’s make a few ornaments and look at the reason behind the Christmas holiday!
